Scope
GB/T 44899-2024 is the English-translated version of 商品条码 散装和大宗商品编码与条码表示.
GB/T 44899-2024 covers the numbering and bar coding of unpacked and bulk commodities - loose produce, meat cut to order, grain and other goods sold by measure rather than by the piece. They break the assumption behind the ordinary retail bar code, which is that the item and its price are fixed when the code is printed: here the identity is fixed but the weight is not known until the scale prints the label, so the symbol must carry the variable attribute alongside the identity. The standard sets the codes and abbreviations, the numbering, the bar code representation, the placement of the symbol on the package or label, and the symbol quality requirements, with a normative annex on encoding variable attribute information and informative annexes giving worked examples for bulk commodities and for ordinary commodity bar codes. It takes effect on 1 May 2025.
