Foreword

This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.

1 Scope

This standard defines general terms for item coding and specific terms and definitions for GS1 system coding.

This standard applies to the technical research and application of article coding.

2 General terminology for item coding

2.1 Article

Tangible material information and intangible service products involved in economic and social activities.

2.2 Product

A thing made of natural or artificial. [GB/T 16656.1-2008, definition 3.2.29]

2.3 Commodity

Items produced for exchange (2.1) refer broadly to items traded on the market (2.1).

2.4 Service

The process of a series of activities produced by a service provider in contact with a customer and the results thereof are often intangible. [GB/T 28222-2011, definition 3.1]

2.5 Code

A character or set of characters that represent a particular thing or concept.

Note: These characters can be Arabic numerals, Latin letters or other symbols that are easy for human and machine to recognize and process. [GB/T 10113-2003, definition 2.2.5]

2.6 Code numbering

The process of assigning code (2.5) to a thing or concept.

Note 1. When making a noun, it refers to the code (2.5) itself.

2.7 Article numbering; article number

A code (2.5) that is easy to be recognized and processed by machines and people according to certain rules (2.1), which gives the code (2.6) to the item (2.1). process.

Note 1. Generally, the item code includes three types. item identification code (2.9), item classification code (2.11), and item attribute code (2.13).
