Important product traceability code coding specifications

1 Scope

GB/T 44583-2024 specifies the coding of traceability codes in the Chinese important products traceability system, the national programme covering food, pharmaceuticals, agricultural inputs, hazardous chemicals and other categories where a recall has to reach individual units. Everything in such a system rests on the code: it must be unique across the whole country and across all the enterprises participating, it must be allocable without a central bottleneck, and it must be readable by the parties who did not issue it. The standard sets the principles and the structure of the traceability code, the segments identifying the responsible party, the product and the unit, the relationship between the traceability code and the existing product and batch identifiers, the rules for allocating and managing codes, the carrier and its symbology, the verification of a code, and the registration and interoperability requirements. It took effect on 29 September 2024.

3 Terms and definitions

The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 38155 apply to this document.

4 General requirements

4.1 The traceability code should be selected based on the traceability accuracy, product characteristics and application status, and an appropriate coding structure should be selected.

4.2 The traceability code should be assigned when the traceability unit is generated and accompany the traceability unit throughout its life cycle.

4.3 The traceability code should meet the requirements of uniqueness, rationality, scalability, simplicity, applicability and standardization. It complies with the requirements of Chapter 7 of GB/T 7027-2002.

5 Traceability Code Structure

5.1 Basic composition of traceability code The traceability code should include the traceability subject information and the traceability unit information, and can be composed of the subject code, product code, batch code, single product code, etc.
