1 Scope

GB/T 44437-2024 is the Chinese general standard for furniture designed for older people, and it is one of the larger documents in the ageing-related standards China is writing. Furniture is where a great many falls and injuries at home begin, and the requirements that make a chair or a bed safe for an eighty-year-old are specific and mostly absent from ordinary furniture standards: the seat height and depth and the armrest position that let someone stand up unaided, the stability under the load of a person pulling themselves up on the furniture rather than sitting on it, the absence of edges, corners and protrusions at the heights a falling person meets them, the grip and the operating force of handles and mechanisms for reduced hand strength, the contrast and the visibility for reduced sight, and the surface and material requirements for cleanability and continence care. The standard sets those requirements together with the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking and instructions. For a furniture maker, a care home operator or a specifier in China, this is the acceptance text.

This document specifies the product classification, requirements, inspection rules, marking, instructions for use, packaging, storage and transportation of furniture suitable for the elderly. The corresponding test methods were developed. This document applies to the design, production, processing, quality inspection and quality assessment of furniture suitable for the elderly.
