1 Scope

GB/T 42639-2023 is the Chinese specification for surveying the intertidal zone - the strip of shore that is sea at high tide and land at low tide. It is among the most productive and most heavily pressured environments on any coast, and among the most awkward to survey: the working window is the few hours around low water, the substrate ranges from rock to deep mud, and the same transect looks different depending on when it was walked. Comparability therefore depends on method, which is what this document fixes. It specifies the basic survey elements, the methods and the technical requirements for investigating the intertidal zone's type and distribution, its topography, its hydrology, its bottom sediment quality and its biology, together with the general technical requirements, the preparation to be done before going into the field, the conduct of the field investigation itself, and the handling of the data that comes back. It applies to comprehensive surveys of the basic resource and environmental elements of the intertidal zone, and serves as a reference for related professional and special-purpose surveys. Under ICS 07.060 and CCS A45, it is the field manual for marine survey teams, coastal management authorities and the environmental assessments that precede coastal development.
