Translation, Interpretation and Related Technical Vocabulary

1 Scope

GB/T 42092-2022 collects the terms and definitions used across translation, interpreting and language technology standards, equivalent to ISO 20539:2019 — the main concepts that underlie the field, the concepts common to translation and interpreting, and then separate groups for translation, for interpreting, and for the technology that supports both. It carries no normative references; the vocabulary is the document, arranged so that a term used in one standard of the family carries the same meaning in the next. Words such as revision, review, source language content or a named mode of interpreting are used loosely in the market, and each of them is also a billable operation in a contract. When a client orders revision and the supplier delivers a self-check by the translator, or a tender asks for interpreting without saying which mode is meant, the dispute that follows is about the word rather than about the work done. Fixing the terms makes service descriptions, quality requirements and purchase orders comparable between suppliers, and gives the rest of the translation standards a shared base to build on. Of use to language service providers, buyers of translation and interpreting, developers of translation memory and machine translation tools, certification bodies, and those who train and assess practitioners.
