1 Scope

China's national standard for emery roll rice whitening machines. It specifies the terms and definitions, the working principle, the classification, the models and basic parameters, the technical requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking, packaging, storage and transport. Whitening is the operation that turns brown rice into white: the bran layers are abraded off the kernel by passing it under pressure between a rotating abrasive roll and a perforated screen. Doing it well is a matter of removing the bran and not the kernel. Rice is brittle, and a broken grain is worth a fraction of a whole one, so the whole design of the machine is a compromise between the pressure needed to remove bran and the pressure at which grains fracture. Emery rolls take more bran per pass than the iron friction type and are gentler on the grain, which is why they are used for the first passes. The machine is also where most of a rice mill's electricity goes, so its efficiency is a real operating cost.
