Scope

GB/T 34327-2017 is the English-translated version of 建筑幕墙术语.

China's national vocabulary for building curtain walls. It defines the general terms and applies to all types of curtain wall. A curtain wall is the non-loadbearing external skin of a building: it carries its own weight and the wind that hits it, and passes both back to the structural frame, but it holds nothing else up. That definition is what makes a vocabulary necessary, because it puts the wall at the meeting point of several trades that use words differently. The glass industry, the aluminium extruder, the sealant manufacturer, the structural engineer and the facade contractor each bring their own terms for the same components, and a facade is designed by one, manufactured by another and installed by a third. China builds more curtain walling than anywhere else in the world, much of it designed abroad and built domestically or the reverse, and the cost of a term meaning two things is measured in leaks, in failed panels and in disputes. This document fixes the general terms; the product standards then use them.
