1 Scope

China's national standard for how a lot of jewellery is judged conforming or not on the basis of a sample. It specifies the requirements and methods for sampling, inspection, judgment and review in the quality inspection of gem, jade and precious metal jewellery, and it applies to that inspection, with other jewellery and precious metal products able to refer to it. Sampling inspection of jewellery is unlike sampling inspection of almost anything else, and the reason is that the items in a lot are not identical. A batch of bolts is a population of nominally identical objects and a sample tells you about the population in a straightforward statistical way. A consignment of rings is a set of individually made items, of different weights and different stones, each carrying its own hallmark and its own claim about what it is. The claim is what is being inspected: this ring is stated to be a particular fineness of gold, set with a stone of a stated species, and the inspection is checking whether that statement is true. A single non-conforming item is therefore not a proportion of defect in a homogeneous lot but a false statement about one object, and the judgment rules have to reflect that. The standard draws on the counting inspection procedures of the GB/T 2828 series, including the assessment procedures for claimed quality levels and the small-lot procedures, and it fixes the inspection items, the test methods, the judgment and the review process by which a disputed result is resolved.
