GB/T 30114.7-2014 is the English-translated version of 空间科学及其应用术语 第7部分:微重力科学.
China's national terminology standard for microgravity science. It is Part 7 of GB/T 30114 and defines the terms of the field that require a unified definition, for use in the drafting of standards and technical documents and in the engineering and scientific exchanges that accompany them. Microgravity science is the study of what matter does when weight is effectively removed, and the reason it needs its own vocabulary is that removing weight removes the dominant force in most of the phenomena that terrestrial physics and engineering were built to describe. On the ground, buoyancy drives convection, sedimentation separates a suspension, and hydrostatic pressure shapes a free liquid surface. In orbit none of those happens, and effects that are ordinarily invisible - surface tension, Marangoni flow, diffusion, electrostatic and magnetic forces - become the controlling ones. A fluid behaves differently, a flame behaves differently, a solidifying alloy behaves differently, and each of those differences is the subject of an experiment that has to be specified, flown and reported in terms that everyone involved understands the same way. The part covers the field in five blocks: the general terms of microgravity itself, including how the environment is characterised and what residual acceleration means; microgravity fluid physics; microgravity combustion science; space materials science, which is the largest single application; and the fundamental physics experiments that use the space environment to test physical law at a precision the ground cannot reach. The audience is deliberately mixed, because a microgravity experiment is designed by physicists and flown by spacecraft engineers, and the two describe the same hardware in different words.
