Scope
GB/T 30114.5-2014 is the English-translated version of 空间科学及其应用术语 第5部分:空间生命科学和生物技术.
China's national terminology standard for space life sciences and biotechnology. It is Part 5 of GB/T 30114 and defines the common terms of the field that require a unified definition, for use in standards, technical documents and scientific and engineering exchanges. Space life science asks what happens to living things when the conditions that all terrestrial biology evolved under are removed. Gravity is the obvious one, and it is not a small variable: every organism on Earth developed in a constant one-gravity field, and a great deal of biology turns out to depend on it in ways that were not apparent until it was taken away. Cells that are not sedimenting behave differently. Fluids in a body redistribute. Bone loses mineral, muscle atrophies, the immune system is suppressed, and plants do not know which way to grow. Alongside microgravity there is radiation of a kind the surface of the Earth is shielded from, an enclosed atmosphere, an altered day-night cycle and a changed magnetic field. The vocabulary problem is the same as in the other parts and sharper: this is a field where biologists, physicians and spacecraft engineers work on the same experiment, and where a term like microgravity, exposure, dose, sample and control has a precise and different meaning in each discipline. It is also a field whose results are hard-won - each experiment flies once, on a schedule set by a launch campaign - and where the comparability of results between missions and between countries depends on the descriptions being exact. The part defines the terms across the domain: the environment and its effects, the organisms and samples, the experimental methods and hardware, and the biotechnology applications. Issued on 5 December 2014 and in force since 1 April 2015.
