China's national terminology standard for lunar and planetary science. It is Part 4 of GB/T 30114 and defines the common terms of the field that require a unified definition, for use in the drafting of standards and technical documents and in the related engineering and scientific exchanges. Lunar and planetary science is a field where the vocabulary problem is unusually acute, and for a specific reason: almost every term in it was borrowed from terrestrial geology and then applied to bodies where the assumptions behind the term do not hold. A crater, a basin, a mare, a rille, a regolith, a highland and a soil all have terrestrial meanings and lunar ones, and the lunar ones are not analogies but redefinitions. Lunar soil is not soil: there is no biology in it and no water, and it is produced by micrometeorite impact rather than by weathering. Lunar regolith behaves like nothing on Earth, and its mechanical properties - which matter enormously to anyone landing on it or driving across it - were established by missions rather than by geology. The same applies across the planets: a term that means one thing on Mars, where there is an atmosphere and there was water, means something different on Mercury. China's own programme gives the standard its urgency. The Chang'e missions produced a large body of lunar data, and the engineering behind them - landing site selection, rover traverse planning, sample collection and return - required the geologists and the engineers to use the same words for the same features. The part therefore defines the terms across the domain: the bodies and their structure, the surface features and processes, the materials and the regolith, the impact and volcanic vocabulary, and the terms used in exploration and sampling.
