GB/T 30114.3-2014 is the English-translated version of 空间科学及其应用术语 第3部分:空间天文.
China's national terminology standard for space astronomy. It is Part 3 of GB/T 30114 and defines the technical terms of space astronomy that require a unified definition, for use in the drafting of standards and technical documents in the field and in the engineering and scientific exchanges that accompany it. Space astronomy is astronomy done from above the atmosphere, and it exists because the atmosphere is opaque. Visible light and part of the radio spectrum reach the ground; everything else - gamma rays, X-rays, most of the ultraviolet and most of the infrared - is absorbed before it arrives. Every one of those bands carries information that the visible does not: the hottest and most violent processes in the universe radiate in X-rays and gamma rays, star formation is hidden behind dust that only the infrared penetrates, and the cosmic microwave background is a millimetre-wave phenomenon. So an astronomer who wants to observe those has to put the instrument in orbit, and the observatory becomes a spacecraft. That is what makes a vocabulary necessary. The field sits between two communities with entirely different technical languages: astronomers, who describe an instrument by what it observes and how well, and spacecraft engineers, who describe the same object by its mass, power, pointing accuracy and thermal design. A term like resolution, sensitivity, field of view or pointing means something specific and different to each, and a mission specification is written by both. The part defines the terms across the domain - the observing bands and the instruments used in each, the detectors, the optics, the observation modes, the calibration, and the data products - so that a specification means one thing to the people who build the observatory and to those who use it.
