Scope

GB/T 29499-2013 is the English-translated version of 建筑用仿幕墙合成树脂涂层.

China's national standard for synthetic resin curtain-wall-imitation coatings used on buildings. It specifies the terms and definitions, the product classification, the basic construction, the materials, the requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking, packaging and storage of the coating systems that give a rendered facade the appearance of a glass or metal curtain wall. A curtain wall is expensive. It is a structural glazing system with its own frame, its own drainage, its own fixings and its own installation trade, and on a mid-market building it is frequently the single largest facade cost. The imitation coating gives the appearance at a fraction of the price: a multi-layer coating system applied to the substrate, with the panel joints and the frame lines rendered as part of the finish, producing a facade that reads as a curtain wall from the street. Whether that is architecturally desirable is not the standard's question. What the standard has to do is make sure the thing performs as a facade coating, because the imitation is only worth having if it lasts. That is where these systems fail: a coating that reproduces the appearance perfectly and chalks, cracks or discolours in three years has cost the building owner the difference twice over. So the standard specifies the system as a system - the putty, the primer and the finish coat together, with the basic construction of the layers - rather than specifying the finish coat alone, because the performance of the assembly is what the facade experiences. The requirements cover the appearance, the adhesion, the flexibility, the resistance to water, to alkali and to impact, the artificial weathering, the freeze-thaw resistance and the dirt pick-up. Issued on 7 May 2013 and in force since 1 December 2013.
