GB/T 26937-2011 is the English-translated version of 统计集装箱量的换算单位.
China's national standard for the conversion units used when container quantities are counted. It specifies the terms and the conversion principle, and it applies to the counting of all the container types specified in GB/T 1413, with other containers able to refer to it. Counting containers is not as simple as counting boxes, because they are not the same size. A terminal that handles a hundred forty-foot containers has moved twice as much as one that has handled a hundred twenty-foot containers, and a fleet of one thousand boxes means nothing until the mix is known. The industry solved this long ago with the twenty-foot equivalent unit, and this standard is what fixes it in Chinese national practice: the twenty-foot container is the unit, and every other container counts as the ratio of its nominal length to twenty feet, rounded to two decimal places. So a forty-foot box is two TEU, a thirty-foot box is one and a half, a forty-five-foot box is two and a quarter, and a ten-foot box is a half. It is a short standard about a single arithmetic convention, and its value is entirely in everyone using the same one. Port throughput, terminal capacity, fleet size, ship capacity, rail and road volumes, tariffs and statistics published by different authorities are all quoted in TEU, and they are only comparable if the conversion behind them is identical - including the rounding rule and the treatment of the non-standard lengths. The standard therefore gives the conversion table for the standard container lengths and the rule for computing the unit for any other length, so that a figure published by one organisation can be set beside a figure published by another. 3 Terms and Definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 TEU twenty-footequivalentunit In a 20ft container is a basic statistical unit, called TEU.
4 Conversion principle
