Scope

GB/T 2662-2017 is the English-translated version of 棉服装.

China's national product standard for clothes with fillings. It specifies the requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking, packaging, transport and storage of padded and wadded outerwear - the cotton-filled and fibre-filled coats and jackets worn through the northern winter. A filled garment is three garments in one: an outer shell, a filling and a lining, joined by quilting or by construction, and almost everything that goes wrong with it happens at the junctions between them. The filling migrates and leaves cold spots; it clumps after washing and does not recover; it beards through the shell fabric so that fibres appear on the outside; the layers shrink at different rates and the garment distorts; and the quilting stitches pull through a shell that was chosen for appearance rather than for tear strength. So the standard specifies the fill material and its declared mass, the evenness of its distribution, the resistance to migration and to fibre penetration through the shell, and the recovery of the assembly after washing - alongside the ordinary requirements on the shell and lining fabrics for fastness, dimensional stability and the safety limits of GB 18401. The declared filling matters commercially as much as technically. The mass and composition of the filling are what the garment is sold on and what is easiest to falsify, since the customer cannot see or weigh it, and the standard's test methods for extracting, drying and weighing the fill and for determining its composition exist to make the declaration checkable. It also sets the making-up requirements, the finished measurement tolerances and the sampling and defect grading by which a lot is accepted. Issued on 12 May 2017 and in force since 1 December 2017, it replaces GB/T 2662-2008.
