Scope

GB/T 22550-2023 is the English-translated version of 旅居车辆 术语.

China's national vocabulary for leisure accommodation vehicles. It defines the terms for the complete vehicle, the mass, dimensions and angles, the design and structure, the devices and components, the safety, the service facilities, the fuel and its storage and supply facilities, the equipment and accessories, and the electrical installation, and it applies to the design, production and use of these vehicles. A motorhome or a caravan is two products in one body, and that is why it needs a vocabulary of its own rather than borrowing from either. As a vehicle it is subject to the whole apparatus of automotive regulation - mass, axle loads, dimensions, approach and departure angles, braking, lighting, towing. As a dwelling it has a habitable space with beds, a kitchen, water and waste tanks, a gas installation, heating, a low-voltage electrical system and a mains connection when parked. The terms of the two worlds do not match, and where they collide the ambiguity has consequences: what counts as the mass in running order and what is payload determines whether an owner is legally overloaded, which is the commonest offence in the category; what counts as a berth determines what the vehicle may be sold as; and the boundary between the vehicle electrical system and the habitation one determines which safety rules apply to which wiring. So the standard fixes the whole vocabulary in one place: the vehicle types and their definitions, the mass and dimensional terms with the conditions under which each is determined, the structural and body terms, the service installations - water, waste, gas, heating, ventilation - and the electrical terms for both systems. Issued on 23 May 2023 and in force since 1 December 2023, it replaces GB/T 22550-2008.
