Scope
GB/T 19202-2017 is the English-translated version of 热带气旋命名.
GB/T 19202-2017 sets out how tropical cyclones in the Northwest Pacific and the South China Sea are named, and how those names are used.
It defines a tropical cyclone and lists the naming principles: no more than nine letters, easy to pronounce, not the name of a commercial establishment, endorsed by every member of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee, with no bad meaning in any member's language, and a Chinese rendering agreed between the national meteorological authority and the services of Hong Kong and Macao.
The RSMC Tokyo Typhoon Center assigns the names from a dedicated table of 140 names contributed by 14 members, reproduced with notes in Annexes A and B. It serves tropical cyclone forecasting, public services and research.
It replaces GB/T 19202-2003, was issued on 29 December 2017 and has applied since 1 July 2018.
