Scope

GB/T 17684-2008 is the English-translated version of 贵金属及其合金术语.

GB/T 17684-2008 specifies the terms commonly used for precious metals and their alloys, and serves as the basis for unified technical terminology in their production, application, inspection, distribution, research and teaching.

It opens with general terms - precious, light and heavy precious metals, the platinum group metals, pure and high purity grades with their purity ranges, the main alloy families, powders and the forms of wrought product (plate, sheet, strip, foil, tube, rod, thread and wire) - and goes on to the vocabulary of precious metal functional materials.

It replaces GB/T 17684-1999: specialised terms for electrical contact materials have been added, together with shape memory alloys, photosensitive materials, nanopowders, brazing filler metals and pastes, winding and slip ring materials and curing- and sintering-type pastes; temperature-measuring materials are now split into thermocouples and platinum resistance thermometers, solders are renamed brazing filler metals, and terms such as palladium-silver resistor paste have been removed.

Foreword

This standard replaces GB/T 17684-1999, Terminology for precious metals and their alloys.

Compared with GB/T 17684-1999, the main changes in this standard are as follows:

- specialised terms for precious metal electrical contact materials have been added;

- the terms precious metal shape memory alloys, precious metal photosensitive materials, precious metal nanopowders, precious metal brazing filler metals, precious metal alloy brazing pastes, precious metal winding materials, precious metal slip ring materials, curing-type precious metal pastes, sintering-type precious metal pastes and others have been added;

- terms of the previous standard such as palladium-silver resistor paste have been deleted;

- the temperature-measuring materials of the previous standard have been further detailed: the previous standard only defined precious metal temperature-measuring materials, whereas this standard, in addition to defining that term, divides precious metal temperature-measuring materials into two categories, precious metal thermocouples and platinum resistance thermometers;

- the term precious metal solders of the previous standard has been changed to precious metal brazing filler metals, which are divided into precious metal electrovacuum brazing filler metals and precious metal alloy brazing pastes;

- the structure has been changed with respect to the previous standard.

This standard was proposed by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association.

This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee on Nonferrous Metals of Standardization Administration of China.

This standard was drafted by Sino-Platinum Metals Co., Ltd. and GRIKIN Advanced Materials Co., Ltd.

The main drafters of this standard are: Shen Liqin, Wang Jian, Zhuang Dianxiang, Zhou Shiping, Jiang Chuangui, Ma Yunqiu, Lv Baoguo, Xiong Xiaodong and Feng Jingsu.
