Scope
GB/T 17476-2023 is the English-translated version of 润滑油和基础油中多种元素的测定 电感耦合等离子体发射光谱法.
GB/T 17476-2023 is the Chinese national method for measuring elements in lubricating oils and base oils by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry.
It covers additive elements, wear metals and contaminants in used and unused lubricants and in base oils, and its Table 1 gives the mass-fraction range and the recommended wavelengths for aluminium, barium, boron, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, silicon, silver and sulphur.
It applies to oil-soluble elements in lubricating oils, base oils and recycled base oils, and does not apply to the quantitative analysis of samples containing insoluble particulates.
Its foreword states that the direct-analysis method of the 1998 edition was dropped and the internal standard method kept. It replaces GB/T 17476-1998, was issued on 23 May 2023 and has applied since 1 September 2023.

Foreword
This document is in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Guidelines for Standardization Work Part 1: Structure and Drafting Rules for Standardization Documents" drafting.
This document replaces GB/T 17476-1998 "Additive elements, wear metals and pollutants in used lubricating oils and in base oils Determination of certain elements (inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry). Compared with GB/T 17476-1998, except for structural adjustment and editorial Besides the changes, the main technical changes are as follows:
a) Changed the sample range and added unused lubricating oil samples (see Chapter 1, Chapter 1 of the 1998 edition);
b) Changed the definitions of the terms "calibration" and "profile scan" and deleted "contaminants", "analytes", "limit of detection", "inductively coupled plasma "body", "linear response range" and "radio frequency" and other terms (see Chapter 3, Chapter 3 of the 1998 edition);
c) The method of directly analyzing the sample is deleted, and the internal standard method is retained (see Chapter 4, Chapter 12 and Chapter 14, Chapter 4, Chapter 1998 of the 1998 edition Chapters 9 and 11);
d) Changed the internal standard elements (see Chapter 8 and Chapter 12, Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 of the 1998 edition);
e) Added automatic sampling requirements (see 8.1, 10.1 of the 1998 edition);
f) Deleted product recommendation information (Chapter 8 and Chapter 11 of the 1998 edition).
Introduction
This document gives a method for the rapid determination of 22 elements in lubricating oil or base oil, and can quickly monitor the wear marks of used lubricating oil elephant. In addition, the document can cover a wide range of metal element types in base oils and recycled base oils.
The additive elements in the unused lubricating oil are mainly derived from the compounding agent, if the concentration of the additive elements is different from their respective specifications Significant difference, indicating that the state of the lubricating oil is abnormal. Compared with the initial concentration data of the unused lubricating oil, the used lubricating oil Concentrations of wear metals can indicate abnormal wear, such as significant increases in boron, sodium, and potassium in lubricating oils, indicating that the contamination is due to equipment contamination.
The result of a coolant leak in the equipment. Therefore this document is often used to monitor the operating status of machinery and determine when action is required Corrective Action.
According to the concentration of metal elements in the recycled base oil, it can reflect the refining effect of the oil refining process. Application of this document to analyze metal content can Whether the base oil used in the reaction meets the specification requirements.
Determination of various elements in lubricating oil and base oil inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry Caution --- Personnel using this document should have practical experience in formal laboratory work. The use of this document may involve certain hazardous materials, equipment, and handling, this document does not address all possible safety issues. It is the user's responsibility to take appropriate safety and health measure.
1 Scope
This document describes the determination of used and unused lubricants and base oils by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Additive elements, wear metals, and contaminants in base oils.
This document applies to the determination of oil-soluble elements in lubricating oils, base oils and recycled base oils. The mass fraction of each element determined in this document See Table 1 for the number range and recommended wavelength. When the element content is not within the range shown in Table 1, the test process described in this document can still be used Determination, but the precision may not be applicable.
This document does not apply to the quantitative analysis of samples containing insoluble particulates.
Note: The analysis results are related to the particle size. If the particle size is larger than a few microns, the obtained results may be low.
