Scope

GB/T 10460-2008 is the English-translated version of 豌豆.

GB/T 10460-2008 is the Chinese national standard for commercial peas, the legume seeds produced by pea cultivars.

It sets the terms used for the crop - pure grain yield, unsound kernels (spotted, injured, moldy, broken, sprouted and shrivelled), foreign impurity (sieve material, inorganic and organic impurity) and colour and odour - and divides peas into six categories by 1000-grain weight and seed-coat colour: large-grained and medium-grained white, green and purple peas.

It then fixes the quality and hygienic requirements, the inspection methods, the inspection rules, the labelling and the packaging, storage and transportation requirements.

It applies to the purchase, storage, transport, processing and sale of commercial peas. It replaces GB/T 10460-1989, was issued on 4 November 2008 and has applied since 20 January 2009.

3 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this standard.

3.1 Peas

Legume seeds produced by pea cultivars.

3.2 Pure grain yield

The proportion of pea grains from which foreign impurities have been removed in the mass fraction of the sample, of which the unsound kernels are calculated as half of their masses.

3.3 Unsound kernel

Kernels that are damaged but still have use value, including the following:

3.3.1 Spotted kernel

The kernel that has disease spots on the surface, which damaged the embryo.

3.3.2 Injured kernel

The kernel whose seed coat is eroded by insects and the embryo is damaged.

3.3.3 Moldy kernel

The kernel whose surface is moldy.

3.3.4 Broken kernel

The kernel whose cotyledon is incomplete, transected, or broken.

3.3.5 Sprouted kernel

The kernel whose embryonic shoot or radicle breaks through the seed coat.

3.3.6 Shrivelled pods/kernel

The kernel that is not plump, and more than half of its surface is shrunk; it is significantly different from normal kernels.

3.4 Foreign impurity

Substances that are not peas, including the following:

3.4.1 Material passed sieve

Material that can pass through a 3.0 mm diameter round-hole sieve.

3.4.2 Inorganic impurity

Soil, sand, bricks, tiles, and other inorganic substances.

3.4.3 Organic impurity

Pea kernels, heterogeneous kernels, straw residues, and other organic matter, which have no edible value.

3.5 Colour, odour

The inherent colour and odour of a batch of peas.

4 Categories

Peas can be divided into the following categories according to their 1000-grain weight and skin color:

4.1 Large-grained white peas: Peas whose 1000-grain weight is greater than 250 g, and no less than 95% of which the seed coat is white or yellowish-white.

4.2 Large-grained green peas: Peas whose 1000-grain weight is greater than 250 g, and no less than 95% of which the seed coat is green.

4.3 Large-grained purple peas: Peas whose 1000-grain weight is greater than 250 g, and no less than 95% of which the seed coat is purple or brownish-purple.

4.4 Medium-grained white peas: Peas whose 1000-grain weight is between 150 g and 250 g, and no less than 95% of which the seed coat is white or yellowish-white.

4.5 Medium-grained green peas: Peas whose 1000-grain weight is between 150 g and 250 g, and no less than 95% of which the seed coat is green.

4.6 Medium-grained purple peas: Peas whose 1000-grain weight is between 150 g and 250 g, and no less than 95% of which the seed coat is purple or brownish-purple. […]
