Scope
GB 434-1995 is the English-translated version of 溴甲烷原药.
GB 434-1995 specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, and marking, packaging, transport and storage requirements for methyl bromide technical (CH3Br, CIPAC 128), the fumigant made of methyl bromide and its production impurities without added modifiers.
Two grades are defined: superior grade with at least 99.5% methyl bromide, at most 0.02% acidity as HBr and 0.03% non-volatile matter, and first grade with at least 98.5%, 0.05% and 0.1% respectively.
Methyl bromide content is determined by gas chromatography with a thermal conductivity detector, either by the internal standard method with trichloromethane (the arbitration method) or by area normalization, while acidity is titrated with 0.01 mol/L sodium hydroxide and non-volatile matter is weighed after evaporation.
The product is packed in dedicated steel cylinders with copper valves filled to no more than 1.57 kg/L, with safety instructions and a two-year guarantee period; sampling and acceptance follow GB/T 1605 and GB/T 1604.
It replaces GB 434-82, was issued on 12 June 1995 and has been in force since 1 February 1996. Classification: ICS 65.100, CCS G25. The document runs to 8 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

Foreword
The other names, structural formula and basic physico-chemical parameters of methyl bromide are as follows:
ISO common name: Methyl bromide
CIPAC code number: 128
Chemical name: monobromomethane
Structural formula: H3C-Br (a carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms and one bromine atom)
Empirical formula: CH3Br
Relative molecular mass: 94.94 (based on the 1989 international relative atomic masses)
Biological properties: insecticidal and bactericidal action; used as a fumigant.
Melting point: -94 °C
Boiling point: 3.5 °C
Vapour pressure (20 °C): 0.189 MPa
Solubility (g/L, 20 °C): readily soluble in organic solvents such as low-molecular-weight alcohols, ethers, esters and ketones, halogenated alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons and carbon disulfide. Solubility in water is 17.5.
Stability: chemically stable, not easily decomposed by acids or alkalis. Stable in storage at normal temperature.
Approved by the State Bureau of Technical Supervision on 1995-06-12; implemented from 1996-02-01. This standard replaces GB 434-82.
