Scope
GB 16715.4-2010 is the English-translated version of 瓜菜作物种子 第4部分:甘蓝类.
Part 4 of China's mandatory national standard for vegetable seed, covering cole crops. The group is the brassicas grown for the head and the flower - cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi - and it presents the seed trade with a difficulty the other vegetable families do not: the species interbreed freely, so a cauliflower seed crop grown within pollination distance of a cabbage crop produces seed that will not be either. That is why isolation distance is part of seed production and why varietal purity is the guarantee the standard leans on hardest. The group is also almost entirely hybrid, produced through self-incompatibility or male sterility, and a breakdown in either shows up as selfed plants in the customer's field. The standard sets the grades and the minima for varietal purity, germination, cleanliness and moisture, with the sampling and the test methods.
