GB 14500 is the framework standard for radioactive waste management in China, and its twenty-three clauses follow the waste from cradle to grave: the objectives and principles, the classification and characterisation, the control of generation, then pretreatment, treatment, conditioning, storage, transport and disposal, the discharge of gaseous and liquid effluents, the handling of exempt waste, and the particular regimes for uranium and thorium mining waste, for waste from nuclear technology applications and from non-uranium mineral processing, closing with decommissioning and remediation, monitoring, safety analysis and quality assurance. It is the document every other Chinese radioactive waste standard sits under. Issued on 5 August 2002, in force since 1 April 2003, replacing GB 14500-1993.
