Scope
GB 14500-2002 is the English-translated version of 放射性废物管理规定.
GB 14500 is the framework standard for radioactive waste management in China, and its twenty-three clauses follow the waste from cradle to grave: the objectives and principles, the classification and characterisation, the control of generation, then pretreatment, treatment, conditioning, storage, transport and disposal, the discharge of gaseous and liquid effluents, the handling of exempt waste, and the particular regimes for uranium and thorium mining waste, for waste from nuclear technology applications and from non-uranium mineral processing, closing with decommissioning and remediation, monitoring, safety analysis and quality assurance. It is the document every other Chinese radioactive waste standard sits under. Issued on 5 August 2002, in force since 1 April 2003, replacing GB 14500-1993. This document was issued on 5 August 2002 by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, and took effect on 1 April 2003.
It replaces GB 14500-1993, which is superseded.

It is a GB standard without the /T suffix: compliance is mandatory in China.
