Scope
GB/T 13071-2010 is the English-translated version of 地质水样 234U/238U、230Th/232Th 放射性活度比值的测定 - 萃淋树脂萃取色层分离 α 能谱法.
GB/T 13071-2010 specifies two methods for determining the radioactivity ratios 234U/238U and 230Th/232Th in 5 L geological water samples: P350 extraction resin chromatographic separation with alpha spectrometry, and CL-TBP extraction resin chromatographic separation with alpha spectrometry; it may also be applied by reference to environmental waters.
Uranium and thorium are coprecipitated with ferric hydroxide, separated and purified on the extraction chromatographic column, eluted separately, electrodeposited onto stainless steel discs and counted on a multichannel alpha spectrometer, with requirements for energy resolution (below 2 %), calibration, efficiency, whole-procedure background, counting time and calculation of the isotope ratios and their uncertainty.
The measuring range is above 1.23 × 10^-3 Bq/L for uranium and thorium, with 230Th/232Th not greater than 15. It replaces GB/T 13071-1991, with a standardised title, added safety warnings and waste disposal provisions, simplified instrumentation and corrected errors.

This standard replaces GB/T 13071-1991, Method of determining the radioactive ratios 234U/238U and 230Th/232Th in geological water samples.
Compared with GB/T 13071-1991, the main changes in this standard are as follows:
- the title of the standard has been standardised;
- warning and caution statements have been added;
- a clause on the disposal of waste has been added;
- the table of contents has been deleted;
- the measuring instruments have been simplified;
- some errors have been corrected.
This standard was proposed by the Ministry of Land and Resources of the People's Republic of China.
