Scope

HG/T 4823-2023 is the English-translated version of 电池用硫酸锰.

HG/T 4823-2023 is the Chinese chemical industry standard for manganese sulfate supplied as a battery raw material, the salt used to prepare nickel-cobalt-manganese precursors for lithium-ion cathodes. It separates the product into a Category I light pink solid powder and a Category II light red solution, then sets the limits each must meet and the analysis behind them: EDTA titration for manganese sulfate content, plasma emission spectrometry for iron, lead, cadmium, chromium, sodium, calcium, nickel, cobalt and aluminium, ion chromatography for chloride and fluoride, and separate methods for silicon, water-insoluble matter, pH, fineness, magnetic foreign matter and oil. Batches are capped at 50 t and every listed item is checked before dispatch. It replaces HG/T 4823-2015, was issued on 28 July 2023 and has applied since 1 February 2024.

7.2 Appearance inspection

Under natural light, place the solid product on a white-backed watch glass or white porcelain plate; place the solution product in a beaker; judge the appearance by visual inspection.

7.3 Determination of manganese sulfate content

7.3.1 Principle

In an ammonia-ammonium chloride buffer solution with a pH of about 10, use chrome black T as an indicator and use disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) standard titration solution to titrate, until the solution changes from purple-red to pure blue, which is the end point. Calculate the manganese sulfate content based on the consumption of the standard titration solution.
