This document aims to provide guidance for acquiring electroluminescence (EL) images of unencapsulated crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic cells and to clarify the EL imaging process.
Various detectable defects, and different methods for detecting and differentiating these defects. When a single EL image cannot detect a particular type of defect... When providing conclusive information, it is recommended to use other methods in combination.
Some batteries possess unique EL characteristics, and using these batteries to manufacture components may introduce certain potential risks. This document addresses these risks.
This provides relevant information.
1 Scope
This document specifies a method for detecting cell defects using electroluminescence (EL) images of crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic cells under forward bias.
This document provides guidelines for acquiring electroluminescence images of unencapsulated c-Si photovoltaic cells and clarifies the various defects that can be detected by EL images.
This involves identifying and differentiating these defects using various methods. When a single EL image cannot provide conclusive information about a particular type of defect... In such cases, it is recommended to use other methods in combination. Some batteries have unique EL characteristics, which may introduce when these batteries are used to make components.
This document provides information on some potential risks.
This document applies to the field of crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, and also to photovoltaic cells of other wafer types.

3 Terms and Definitions
The terms and definitions defined in IEC TS61836:2025 and the following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 Electroluminescence; EL
When a forward bias voltage is applied to a semiconductor device, the excited carriers in the device undergo radiative recombination, resulting in luminescence.
3.2 Open circuit
In a two-port circuit, there is no electrical path connecting the ports.
Note 1.When a battery is defective or damaged and connected to an external circuit, no current flows through the connection point between the battery and the external circuit; in this case, the battery is "open circuit". state.
Note 2.When one or all batteries are not connected to the electrical terminal, or when current does not flow in accordance with the manner specified in IEC TS61836:2025 3.4.57, then Photovoltaic cells are open circuits.
3.3 Forward bias
The "+" and "-" terminals of the power source that provides the current are each connected to the photovoltaic cell with the same polarity via wires.
