Scope

GB/Z 141-2025 is the English-translated version of 蓄电池和蓄电池组 起动用铅酸蓄电池减少爆炸危险的装置性能检验的试验方法.

GB/Z 141-2025 is a guiding technical document, modified from IEC TS 61430:1997, on testing devices fitted to lead-acid starter batteries to reduce explosion hazards.

It applies to performance testing of these devices on lead-acid starter batteries and battery packs. Protective measures cover insulated tools and short circuits, static electricity, the order for connecting and disconnecting battery terminals, and charging in a well-ventilated area.

The safety clause puts the gas source, spark electrode and test fixture inside an explosion-proof chamber with external ventilation, keeps the charging equipment outside with two emergency disconnect switches at least 3 metres away, and calls for full-face and ear protection.

Preparations before the test include soapy-water leak checks and a fully charged battery, with the venting and sparking tests in normative annexes. It was issued on 3 December 2025.

1 Scope

This document describes the test methods for verifying the device for reducing the explosion hazard of lead-acid starter batteries (hereinafter referred to as the "device"), and outlines the protective measures to be followed during the test.

This document applies to the performance testing of the device for reducing the explosion hazard of lead-acid starter batteries and battery packs.

2 Normative references

This document has no normative references.

3 Terms and definitions

This document does not contain any terms or definitions that need to be defined.

4 Protective measures

4.1 Principles

When using or working near a storage battery, requirements 4.2~4.5 should be met.

4.2 Avoid short circuits

When using a storage battery, insulated tools shall be used to avoid accidental short circuits. All metal jewelry on the hands, wrists, and neck should be removed before testing.

4.3 Avoid static electricity

It is advisable to avoid static electricity, as this may cause the gas to be ignited.

4.4 Circuit connection and disconnection

4.4.1 When the circuit may generate current or has already generated current, it is not advisable to connect or disconnect the battery.

4.4.2 When disconnecting the battery from the vehicle circuit, the terminal connected to the vehicle frame (ground) should be disconnected first; when connecting the circuit, the terminal connected to the vehicle frame (ground) shall be connected last.

4.4.3 Smoking, open flames, or any source of sparks are strictly prohibited near the battery.

4.5 Charging area

Charging should be done in a well-ventilated area.

NOTE: Some battery storage areas may have poor ventilation. Before testing, carefully disperse any explosive gases.

5 Safety precautions

WARNING. The testing equipment may explode. Strict safety precautions must be followed during the test to avoid personal injury.

5.1 The gas source, spark electrode and test fixture shall be completely enclosed in an explosion-proof test chamber with external ventilation (see Figure 1), which can be indirectly observed.

5.2 The battery charging equipment shall be located outside the explosion-proof test chamber for easy access by test personnel. The charging circuit shall be electrically isolated from the spark generation circuit and have two emergency disconnect switches.

The requirements for the emergency disconnect switches are as follows.

a) installed in a location easily accessible to test personnel;

b) a location at least 3 meters away from the explosion-proof test chamber.

These emergency disconnect switches shall only be used in emergency situations, as using them may damage certain types of charging equipment.

5.3 The test should preferably be conducted in an area of not less than 3 m2.When any circuit inside the explosion-proof test chamber is energized or may be energized, signs shall be posted to prohibit unauthorized personnel from entering the area.

5.4 During testing, the area where the explosion-proof test chamber is located shall be clearly marked, and all personnel who are not fully familiar with all safety precautions and who are not wearing protective equipment are prohibited from entering (see 5.6).

5.5 During the test, smoking, open flames, or any source of sparks unrelated to the test are strictly prohibited in the area where the explosion-proof test chamber is located. All lighting fixtures and accessories shall be explosion-proof.

5.6 Full-face protective gear shall be worn in the area where the explosion-proof test chamber is located. In addition, appropriate ear protection shall be worn to prevent exposure to the loud noise generated by a battery explosion.

5.7 A tester shall be stationed near the emergency disconnect switch for the spark-generating circuit and all circuits electrically isolated from the battery charging circuit.

5.8 The exhaust fan of the explosion-proof test chamber shall be in operation throughout the entire test period unless the test method requires it to be turned off (see Appendix B).

After each test, the exhaust fan shall be turned on, and the charging and spark generating circuits shall be interrupted for at least 5 minutes before personnel are allowed to enter.

During this period, it shall be ensured that all hydrogen gas is vented from the explosion-proof test chamber to prevent the possibility of a delayed explosion caused by a hidden flame.

WARNING. Hydrogen can burn without a visible flame.

5.9 A malfunction in the equipment may cause the battery to rupture, resulting in an electrolyte spill. Methods for handling spilled dilute sulfuric acid can be obtained from sulfuric acid suppliers, fire and rescue organizations, etc.

6 Preparations before the test

6.1 Sparking test -- applicable to devices installed on batteries

6.1.1 Check for gas leaks anywhere on the test battery except for the device, for example, by spraying soapy water on the surface of the battery while it is charging and observing whether bubbles are generated.

6.1.2 Before charging the battery, check if the spark generator is working properly.

6.1.3 The battery equipped with the device under test shall be fully charged and in a state of obvious gas evolution.

NOTE: If the battery charging method complies with the requirements of 5.2 of GB/T 5008.1-2023 and the charging is carried out at an ambient temperature of 25 °C±10 °C, the battery is considered to be fully charged.

6.1.4 Within 1 hour after the battery is charged, begin the venting test (according to Appendix B).

6.2 Sparking test -- applicable only to the device

6.2.1 As shown in Figure 2, the air inlet of the test fixture shall be sufficiently lower than the water level to prevent the ignited gas from flowing back to the gas source.

6.2.2 Pour water into the test fixture until the water level is 3 mm below the top of the fixture. As shown in Figure 2, place the frame on a 0.025 mm thick polyethylene film, then insert the four screw holes of the frame into the four studs of the test fixture, ensuring the film fills the opening between the fixture and the frame. Tighten the frame downwards with wing nuts to ensure a seal around the washers. Mount the device under test onto the fixture.

6.2.3 Check for gas leaks outside the device, for example, by using soapy water to check the airtightness of the gas source.

6.2.4 Ensure the spark source is functioning properly and the battery is fully charged (see the note in 6.1.3).

6.2.5 Begin the venting test within 1 hour of charging the battery. If the requirements are met (according to Appendix B), then begin the sparking test described in C.2 (according to Appendix C).
