Scope
GB/T 655-2011 is the English-translated version of 化学试剂 过硫酸铵.
GB/T 655-2011 is the Chinese national standard for ammonium persulfate, (NH4)2S2O8, used as a chemical reagent. It specifies the characteristics, specifications, test methods, inspection rules, packaging and marking of the reagent, and applies to the testing of ammonium persulfate chemical reagent.
The assay is an iodometric titration with sodium thiosulfate standard solution, with a blank test; the other tests include clarity against the HG/T 3484 standards and general methods for impurities such as chloride, heavy metals, iron, water-insoluble matter and residue on ignition.
The specifications for the analytical reagent and chemically pure grades are set out in Table 1 of the standard. It replaces GB/T 655-1994. Issued on 12 May 2011 by AQSIQ and SAC, it has been in force since 1 December 2011. Classification: ICS 71.040.30, CCS G 62.

3 Characteristics
This reagent is a white crystal or crystalline powder, soluble in water. It gradually decomposes in moist air, releasing oxygen.
4 Specifications
The specifications of ammonium persulfate are given in Table 1.
5.1 General provisions
Unless otherwise specified, the standard titration solutions, standard solutions for impurities, preparations and products used in this chapter shall be prepared in accordance with GB/T 601, GB/T 602 and GB/T 603. The water used shall comply with grade 3 water of GB/T 6682. Samples shall be weighed to an accuracy of 0.01 g. Solutions expressed in % are mass fractions.
5.2 Assay
Weigh 0.3 g of the sample to an accuracy of 0.0001 g into a dry iodine flask. Add 30 mL of water and 4 g of potassium iodide, shake well and leave in the dark for 30 min. Add 2 mL of acetic acid (36%) and titrate with sodium thiosulfate standard titration solution [c(Na2S2O3) = 0.1 mol/L]. Near the end point, add 3 mL of starch indicator solution (10 g/L) and continue titrating until the blue colour disappears. Carry out a blank test at the same time.
The mass fraction w of ammonium persulfate, in %, is calculated with formula (1), where V1 is the volume of sodium thiosulfate standard titration solution consumed by the sample, V2 the volume consumed in the blank test, both in millilitres (mL); c the exact concentration of the sodium thiosulfate standard titration solution, in moles per litre (mol/L); M the molar mass of ammonium persulfate, in grams per mole (g/mol); and m the mass of the sample, in grams (g).
5.3 Clarity test
Dissolve 20 g of the sample in 100 mL of water. The turbidity of the solution shall not exceed the following clarity standards of HG/T 3484: analytical reagent, No. 3; chemically pure, No. 5.
