GB/T 5881-2024 gives the Chinese test methods for the physical and chemical properties of ramie fibre. Ramie is a Chinese speciality: China grows and processes the great majority of the world's crop, and the fibre is traded on properties, fineness, strength, residual gum content, whiteness, that have to be measured the same way by seller and buyer or the trade cannot function. The standard sets the sampling scheme first, the batch sample, the laboratory sample and the test specimen, since with a natural fibre the sampling contributes more variance than the measurement; then each determination in turn, with its principle, apparatus, procedure, calculation and expression of results: the moisture regain and moisture content, the residual gum content that governs how the fibre will spin, the fineness, the breaking strength and elongation, the whiteness and colour, the oil content and the other chemical characteristics. It takes effect on 1 February 2025, and for anyone buying, processing or specifying Chinese ramie it is the method a contract dispute is settled by.
