Scope
GB/T 4698.21-2019 is the English-translated version of 海绵钛、钛及钛合金化学分析方法 第21部分:锰、铬、镍、铝、钼、锡、钒、钇、铜、锆量的测定 原子发射光谱法.
GB/T 4698.21-2019 is Part 21 of GB/T 4698 and specifies the determination of manganese, chromium, nickel, aluminum, molybdenum, tin, vanadium, yttrium, copper and zirconium content in titanium sponge, titanium and titanium alloys by atomic emission spectrometry.
Clause 1 states that the part applies to the determination of those ten elements in titanium sponge, titanium and titanium alloys and refers the determination range to Table 1.
The part is short and runs Scope, Normative references, Principle, Reagents, Equipment, Sample, Test steps, Precision and Test report.
The principle is to dissolve the test material in hydrochloric acid, evaporate it to dryness, burn it to the oxide, grind it to powder and mix it with a buffer of silver chloride and carbon powder, then excite the sample by arc in an atomic emission spectrometer and calculate the content of each impurity element from the working curve; the reagents clause lists spectrally pure oxides of the elements to be determined together with titanium oxide, hydrochloric acid, graphite powder and silver chloride, and makes the buffer by grinding silver chloride and graphite powder together in a ratio of 85:15.
The equipment clause calls for a DC arc atomic emission spectrometer and a box resistance furnace. Clause 2 cites GB/T 31981 on methods of sampling and sample preparation for the chemical composition analysis of titanium and titanium alloy.
The foreword records that the determination range was modified to 0.0005% to 0.050%, that the buffer was changed from toner to a silver chloride-graphite buffer, that the method principle was re-described and that clauses on the sample, precision and the test report were added, and it names the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association as proposer and the National Technical Committee on Non-ferrous Metals of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 243) as the committee in charge.
It replaces GB/T 4698.21-1996, was issued on 4 June 2019 and has applied since 1 May 2020.

This Part replaces GB/T 4698.21-1996 "Sponge titanium, titanium and titanium alloys-Determination of manganese, chromium, nickel, aluminum, molybdenum, tin, vanadium, yttrium, copper, zirconium content-Emission spectrographic method". Compared with GB/T 4698.21-1996, in addition to editorial modifications, the main technical changes are as follows:
- modified the determination range: Mn, Cr, Ni from 0.02%~0.20%, Al, Mo, Sn, V, Y and Zr from 0.01%~0.15%, Cu from 0.001%~0.015% to 0.0005%~0.050% (see Clause 1 of this Edition, Clause 1 of Edition 1996);
- modified the normative references (see Clause 2 of this Edition, Clause 2 of Edition 1996);
- buffer was modified from toner to silver chloride-graphite buffer; re-described the method principle (see Clause 3 of this Edition, Clause 3 of Edition 1996);
