- the content of "air brake (1)" and "hand brake (2)" has been revised.
Annex A of this part is normative. It gives some reference drawings of the following equipment together with the English equivalents of the related terms:
- air brake;
- car body foundation brake rigging;
- manual brake;
- type 104 air distributing valve;
- type 120 freight car air control valve;
- safety valve;
- F8 distributing valve;

1 Scope
This standard defines the terms for the brake equipment of railway vehicles.
This standard applies to standards, technical documents and scientific and technical publications relating to railway vehicles.
2 Braking performance
2.1 Braking
The action of applying an external force to decelerate a vehicle or a train, or to prevent its tendency to accelerate.
2.2 Release
The action of removing the braking.
2.3 Friction braking
A mode of braking in which the kinetic energy of the locomotive or vehicle is converted into heat by solid or fluid friction.
2.4 Dynamic braking
A mode of braking in which the kinetic energy of the vehicle is dissipated without relying on frictional heating.
2.5 Adhesion braking
A mode of braking in which the braking force is produced through adhesion at the rolling contact point between wheel and rail.
2.6 Non-adhesion braking
A mode of braking in which the braking force is produced without relying on adhesion at the rolling contact point between wheel and rail.
2.7 Service brake application
Braking used to regulate the running speed of the train or to stop it at a predetermined place.
2.8 Emergency brake application
Braking that decelerates the train rapidly so that it makes an emergency stop within the shortest distance.
2.9 Local reduction
A reduction in the pressure of the compressed air in the brake pipe, caused by the distributing valve (or triple valve) at the start of braking, so as to accelerate the operation of the distributing valves (or triple valves) of the adjacent vehicles.
2.10 Quick service
The local reduction produced by the distributing valve (or triple valve) as it moves towards, or while it is in, the service brake position.
2.11 Quick action
The local reduction produced by the distributing valve (or triple valve) in the emergency brake position.
2.12 Spontaneous leakage
A reduction in the pressure of the compressed air in the brake pipe caused by leakage from the brake.
2.13 Brake propagation
The phenomenon whereby, when the train brakes, the braking action of the air brakes of the successive vehicles is transmitted from front to rear.
2.14 Release propagation
The phenomenon whereby, when the train releases, the releasing action of the air brakes of the successive vehicles is transmitted from front to rear.
2.15 Brake propagation rate
The distance over which the brake propagation is transmitted per unit of time.
2.16 Release propagation rate
The distance over which the release propagation is transmitted per unit of time.
2.17 Insensitivity
The property whereby the brake does not apply when the compressed air in the brake pipe is reduced slowly by no more than a specified value.
2.18 Service stability
The property whereby the brake does not produce an emergency application during service braking.
2.19 Sensitivity
The property whereby the brake applies within a given time when the compressed air in the brake pipe is reduced at a given rate or by a given amount.
2.20 Braking force
An external force acting on the vehicle, produced by the brake equipment during braking and generated through wheel-rail adhesion (or the attraction between rail and magnet), whose magnitude can be controlled and whose direction is opposite to the direction of travel of the vehicle.
2.21 Braking time
The time from the instant at which the driver operates the brake valve to apply the brake until the train has decelerated to a predetermined speed.
2.22 Free running time
A calculation assumption: the time during which, after the driver begins braking, the train is assumed to run at the initial braking speed with no braking force acting.
2.23 Actual braking time
A calculation assumption: the time during which, after the free running time, the train is assumed to decelerate under the predetermined braking force applied instantaneously.
2.24 Braking distance
The distance run by the train during the braking time.
2.25 Free running distance
The distance run by the train during the free running time.
2.26 Actual braking distance
The distance run by the train during the actual braking time.
2.27 Calculated braking distance
The sum of the free running distance and the actual braking distance.
2.28 Braking ratio
The ratio of the total brake shoe force of a vehicle to the weight of that vehicle.
2.29 Empty braking ratio
The braking ratio of a vehicle at its tare weight.
2.30 Load braking ratio
The braking ratio of a vehicle at its gross weight.
2.31 Hand brake braking ratio
The ratio of the total brake shoe force of a vehicle under manual braking to the weight of that vehicle.
2.32 Axle braking ratio
The ratio of the total brake shoe force on a braked axle to the weight on that axle.
The weight is the sum of the axle load and the dead weight of the wheelset.
2.33 Braking leverage
The ratio of the theoretical total brake shoe force at a braking efficiency of 100 % to the thrust of the brake cylinder piston.
2.34 Braking efficiency
The ratio of the actual total brake shoe force to the theoretical total brake shoe force.
2.35 Average retardation rate
The ratio of the difference between the final and the initial braking speed to the time taken by that deceleration.
2.36 Initial speed at brake application
The speed of the train at the instant at which the driver operates the brake valve to apply the brake.
