1 Scope

This part defines the terms for equipment attached to railway special-purpose freight cars.

This part applies to standards, technical documents and scientific and technical publications relating to railway vehicles.

2 Tank cars

2.1 Unloading device

A device that discharges liquid, gaseous or powdered goods from the inside of the tank to the outside.

By unloading method, unloading devices are divided into top-discharge and bottom-discharge types.

2.2 Steam heating pipe lines

The piping through which steam or another heat source heats the medium in the tank so that it can be discharged smoothly.

Where steam passes through the heating pipe lines into a heating jacket on the outside of the tank, the tank is heated externally.

Where steam or another heat source passes into coiled heating pipes inside the tank, the tank is heated internally.

2.3 Safety accessories

Devices fitted on the tank to ensure the safety of the tank car, such as safety valves, bursting disc devices, emergency shut-off devices, pressure gauges, liquid level indicators and temperature measuring instruments.

2.4 Air pressure room

A device installed on a dry bulk goods tank car that fluidises the dry bulk material during unloading.

2.5 Heat preservation device

Fittings such as an external insulation jacket (pressure outer jacket) and an insulation layer on the tank, provided so that the goods are kept within the required temperature during transport.

Heat may be preserved with insulating materials or by vacuum insulation.

2.6 Liquid guiding plate

A baffle that restricts and guides the flow of liquid or powdered goods in a given direction.

2.7 Head ladder

A ladder fixed at one head end of the tank, by which personnel climb to the top of the tank to work.

2.8 Side ladder

A ladder fixed on both sides at the middle of the tank, by which personnel climb to the top of the tank to work.

2.9 Manhole ladder

A ladder fixed inside the tank, by which personnel enter the tank through the manhole to work inside it.

2.10 Liquid trap

A bowl-shaped component at the lowest point of the tank in which liquid collects.

2.11 Liquid outlet pipe seat

The pipe seat on which the liquid suction pipe is mounted.

2.12 Air admission pipe

The passage through which air enters the tank to prevent deformation of the tank by vacuum.

2.13 Car-escorting room

A room on a tank car provided as a working and rest room for the personnel escorting the vehicle.

2.14 Measure device

A device that indicates and measures the volume of the tank.

A volume limitation plate, a measuring valve, a movable tube, or an electronic or magnetic measuring device may be used.

2.15 Volume limitation plate

An indicator plate installed inside the tank that shows the liquid level corresponding to the effective capacity of the tank.

2.16 Total capacity

The sum of the volume of the manhole (or dome) and the volume of the tank (of a tank car).

2.17 Effective capacity

The volume below the permissible height marked on the volume limitation plate (or other volume measuring device).

2.18 Volume calculation table

A table giving the calculation of the capacity.

2.19 Steam intake static pressure

The permissible pressure of the steam supplied to the tank heating jacket and heating pipe lines.

3 Dump cars

3.1 Stable (or steady) distance

The minimum distance, during the tipping of a dump car, from the combined centre of gravity of the goods and the car box to the vertical plane through the centre of the pivot axle.

3.2 Full open angle

The angle between the floor of the car box and the horizontal plane when the side door is fully open.

3.3 Self-cleaning dump angle

The angle between the floor of the car box and the horizontal plane at which unloading begins.

3.4 Reset factor

The ratio of the restoring moment produced by the dead weight of the car box, when the car box returns to its position, to the resisting moment produced by closing the side door.

3.5 Suppressing toggle

The mechanism that controls the opening and closing and the self-locking of the side door of a dump car. It is of two kinds, long-leg and short-leg.

3.6 Dumping mechanism

A mechanism that controls the normal opening and closing of the side door of the car box safely and reliably, and has the functions of opening the door early and unloading early.

4 Hopper cars

4.1 Pneumatic driving device

A driving device that uses compressed air as the source of power for the double-acting cylinder.

4.2 Hand driving device

A driving device that opens and closes the bottom doors using manual effort as the source of power.

4.3 Pneumatic control pipe line device

The piping that supplies compressed air to the pneumatic driving device.

4.4 Changeover valve

A valve that switches the air passages.

4.5 Application valve

A valve that controls the double-acting cylinder so as to open and close the bottom doors.

4.6 Pressure regulating valve

A valve that regulates the air entering the control piping to a given pressure.

4.7 Valve for unloading while moving

A valve that enables the train to unload while running at restricted speed.

4.8 Bi-direction cylinder

An air cylinder that uses air as the source of power to control the extension and retraction of the lever.

5 Isothermal cars

5.1 Refrigerating/heating equipment

The general name for the refrigerating equipment, the heating equipment and the control system.

5.2 Fuel equipment

The equipment that supplies fuel to the diesel engine of a diesel generating set or of a directly driven refrigerating unit.

5.3 Lubricant equipment

The equipment for filling and storing the lubricating oil of the diesel engine of a diesel generating set or of a directly driven refrigerating unit.
