Scope

GB/T 42176-2022 is the English-translated version of 海浪等级.

GB/T 42176-2022 is the Chinese national scale that sorts ocean waves into grades by their height, for wave observation and wave forecasting.

It defines the quantities the grading rests on: the ocean wave itself, wave height as the height difference between an adjacent crest and trough, the average of the highest one-third and of the highest one-tenth of the wave heights measured over a period, and the whitecap.

Clause 1 applies it to wave observation, forecasting and warning, and to wave disaster investigation, risk assessment and the production of analysis products. It takes its terms from GB/T 14914.2 and GB/T 15920, which it quotes.

Forecasting centres and marine survey bodies use it. Issued on 30 December 2022, it has applied since 1 April 2023.

3 Terms and Definitions

The following terms and definitions defined in GB/T 14914.2 and GB/T 15920 apply to this document.

3.1 Ocean wave

Waves in the sea caused by wind. [Source: GB/T 15920-2010, 2.4.1]

3.2 Wave level grade of wave height

The scale reflecting the wave height of ocean waves is determined according to the wave height on the sea surface.

3.3 Wave height

The height difference between adjacent peaks and troughs on a wave profile. [Source: GB/T 15920-2010, 2.4.9]

3.4 1/3 height of highestone-thirdwave

Arrange the sequence of wave heights measured continuously in a certain period of time from large to small, and take the average value of the first 1/3 wave heights after sorting. [Source: GB/T 15920-2010, 2.4.36]

3.5 1/10 height of highestone-tenthwave

Arrange the sequence of wave heights measured continuously in a certain period of time from large to small, and take the average value of the first 1/10 wave heights after sorting. [Source: GB/T 15920-2010, 2.4.37]

3.6 Whitecap

When the wind and wave steeply exceed the limit, the white spray phenomenon occurs when the wave breaks.
