Scope
GB/T 38779-2020 is the English-translated version of 有轨电车道路通行安全技术规范.
GB/T 38779-2020 sets out how tramways that share the road network are to be organized and signalled.
Clause 1 states that the standard covers the traffic organization and channelization of trams on the road, the setting of traffic signals and safety facilities, requirements for traffic signal priority access control, the interactive interface specification for intersection signal equipment, and the assessment of access and safety benefits; it applies to the organization of trams running in dedicated lanes on the road, while trams mixed with motor vehicle traffic may follow it for reference.
Its contents list names clause 4 Traffic organization and traffic channelization, broken down into basic principles, intersection, section and platform, and clause 5 Traffic signal and safety facilities setting, which treats special signal lights for trams, traffic signs, traffic marking and traffic safety facilities separately.
Clause 6 covers traffic signal priority access control, including information collection and transmission, response mode, scheme setting, operating status monitoring records and control constraints, while clause 7 deals with the intersection signal equipment interface, its requirements and the interactive information exchanged, and clause 8 gives the evaluation indexes and the calculation methods for traffic efficiency and for safety benefit.
Five appendices follow: schematic diagrams of common traffic patterns at tram intersections, traffic sign styles and settings, tram signal light styles and settings (normative), traffic marking styles and settings, and a serial communication protocol between the signal controller of the tram intersection and the road traffic signal controller.
The body points to companion documents for detail, so that isolation facilities for dedicated tram lanes follow GB 50688 and the barrier-free facilities at tram entrance and exit passages follow GB 50763, while the terms used are those defined in GB/T 31418 and GB/T 50833.
The standard is proposed and administered by the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China, and the drafting bodies include the Ministry's Institute of Transportation Management Science together with tram operating companies in Suzhou and Shenzhen. It was issued on 28 April 2020 and has applied since 1 November 2020.
