Scope
GB/T 29863-2023 is the English-translated version of 服装制图.
China's national standard for garment pattern drawing. It specifies the drawing scale, the line types and their uses, the dimensioning and the marking conventions used in the technical drawings from which garments are made. A garment pattern is an engineering drawing, and the industry that uses it treats it as one. A designer produces a specification, a pattern maker turns it into a set of pattern pieces with their seam allowances, notches, grain lines and internal construction marks, a grader produces the same pieces in every size, and a factory - frequently in another country, working from a file - cuts and sews from them. Everything in that chain depends on the drawing meaning the same thing to everyone who reads it. A line that one house uses for a fold line and another for a stitching line produces a garment made wrong, and the error is discovered on finished goods. So the standard fixes the conventions: the scale, the line types and widths and what each signifies, the units, the dimensioning rules, and the way particular features are marked. The 2023 revision is a working revision of exactly those conventions. It changes the drawing scale requirements and the line legend - adding uses for thick and thin dotted lines, merging the dash-dotted variants and deleting the double dash-dotted line, and revising the line widths. It adds a requirement to label the units, revises the basic rules for marking dimension values, and renames the dimensioning types: straight distance and horizontal distance become linear dimensioning, slant distance becomes polyline dimensioning, and arc dimensions and equal-division dimensions are added. Those changes look editorial and are not: a line type deleted from the standard is a line type that must no longer appear on a drawing. Issued on 6 August 2023 and in force since 1 March 2024, it replaces GB/T 29863-2013.
