1 Scope

China's national standard for iron roll rice whiteners. It specifies the terms and definitions, the working principle, the classification, the model designation and basic parameters, the technical requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking, packaging, transport and storage of the machines that whiten brown rice with an iron roll. Whitening is the operation that turns brown rice into white rice by removing the bran layers and the germ, and it is where a rice mill makes or loses its money. The kernel is being abraded, and every pass that removes bran also breaks grain: broken rice sells for a fraction of the price of head rice, so the whole art of the machine is to remove the bran with as little breakage as possible. The two families of whitener do it differently. An abrasive roll cuts the bran off with a grinding surface and works by friction against the stone; an iron roll works by friction between the grains themselves, the ribbed iron roll compressing and circulating the mass inside a slotted screen so that the kernels rub against each other and shed the bran. The iron roll machine works at higher pressure and lower speed, produces a whiter, more polished surface and a better appearance, and is the machine used for the final passes and for the high-quality rice; it is also gentler on a kernel that has already been through an abrasive pass. What the standard specifies follows from that: the whitening degree achieved and the breakage produced, the capacity and the power consumption, the roll and the screen and their materials and wear, the pressure adjustment at the discharge, the aspiration that removes the bran and the heat, the balance and vibration of a fast rotating roll, and the noise and safety requirements.
