Scope

GB/T 19721.2-2017 is the English-translated version of 海洋预报和警报发布 第2部分:海浪预报和警报发布.

GB/T 19721.2-2017 is the Chinese national standard on how wave forecasts and wave warnings are issued at sea. It sets the levels into which wave forecasts and warnings are graded and states what a forecast or a warning has to contain.

The terms it relies on are taken largely from the physical oceanography vocabulary of GB/T 15920-2010: ocean waves, wind waves, swell, significant wave height, wave direction and wave period, and an annex gives a wave scale table.

It is Part 2 of the GB/T 19721 series, alongside the parts on storm surge and sea ice warnings, and it is intended for the marine forecasting agencies that provide wave forecasting and warning services.

It replaces GB/T 19721.2-2005, was issued on 9 March 2017 and has applied since 1 October 2017.

Foreword

GB/T 19721 "Marine forecast and alarm release" is divided into three parts.

- Part 1. Storm surge alarm release;

- Part 2. Wave Forecast and Alert Release;

Part 3. Sea ice forecast and warning release.

This part is part 2 of GB/T 19721.

This part is drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.

This section replaces GB/T 19721.2-2005 "Marine Forecast and Alert Release Part 2: Wave Forecast and Alert Release". versus

GB/T 19721.2-2005 compared to the main changes are as follows.

- the definition of terms such as "waves" and "effective waves" (see 3.2, 3.5 in 2005);

- the definition of terms such as "effective wave height", "wave", "wave cycle", "wave level", "coastal waters", "offshore sea area" 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9);

- the words "purpose" and "basic principles" (see chapter 4, chapter 5 of the 2005 edition);

- modified content of the hierarchy (see Chapter 4, 6.1 of 2005);

- modified the title and content of the forecast and warning requirements (see Chapter 5, Chapter 6 of the 2005 edition);

- "Archive", "Format", "Data", "Archives" (see 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, 7 in 2005);

Amend the Appendix A wave table (see Appendix A of Appendix A, 2005);

- Appendix B, Appendix C, Appendix D (see Appendix B, Appendix C, Appendix D of the 2005 edition) was deleted.
