Scope

GB/T 19635-2024 is the English-translated version of 棉花 长绒棉.

GB/T 19635-2024 is the Chinese standard for extra-long staple cotton, the sea island cotton grown mainly in Xinjiang and used for the finest yarns. It trades at a large premium over upland cotton, and the premium is the whole reason for the standard: the grade, the staple length and the micronaire are what the price is set from, and a dispute over any of them is a dispute over a lot of money. The document sets the grades and the standard samples they are judged against, the classification by staple length, the micronaire and maturity requirements, the strength requirement, the moisture and trash content and the limits on them, the requirements on foreign fibre, which is the defect that most often downgrades a Chinese cotton lot, the packaging and the bale marking, the sampling and the test methods, and the rules for settling a dispute. The 2024 edition replaces GB/T 19635-2005. For a ginner, a spinner or a trader dealing in Chinese extra-long staple cotton, this is the contract text.
