Scope
GB/T 19266-2024 is the English-translated version of 地理标志产品质量要求 五常大米.
China's national quality requirements for Wuchang rice as a protected geographical indication product. It defines the terminology, specifies the production area, the production environment, the technical requirements, the inspection rules, the marking and packaging and the transport and storage, and describes the corresponding inspection methods. It applies to the planting, processing, inspection and circulation of Wuchang rice and to the protection and management of the indication. Wuchang rice is the most valuable rice name in China and consequently the most counterfeited: the quantity sold under the name each year has long exceeded the quantity the area can grow. What the name stands for is a specific japonica rice grown in one county of Heilongjiang, where a long cold summer with a very large day-night temperature difference and a single annual crop produce a grain with a particular starch composition and aroma. The standard has to convert that into things that can be checked. It delimits the origin area in a normative annex and specifies the production environment - the soil, the irrigation water and the air quality - and the varieties permitted. It then sets the technical requirements on the milled grain: the sensory characteristics, the moisture, the milling degree, the amylose content and the gel consistency which together determine how the cooked rice behaves, the chalky grain rate with its own normative test method, and the broken and imperfect grain limits. And it gives a normative method for the evaluation of eating quality, which is the property the name is actually bought for and the hardest to reduce to a number. Issued and in force since 31 December 2024, it replaces GB/T 19266-2008.
