Foreword

This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009. This standard replaces GB/T 1912-2007 "dictionary paper". Compared with GB/T 1912-2007, the main changes of this standard are as follows:

1 Scope

China's national product standard for bible paper - the very thin, very opaque printing paper used for dictionaries, reference works and scientific publications. It specifies the classification, the requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules, and the marking, packaging, transport and storage, and it applies to high-grade printing papers of this kind for rotary and offset printing. Bible paper exists to solve one contradiction. A dictionary has to contain thousands of pages and still be a book a person can hold, so the paper must be extremely light - a fraction of the grammage of ordinary book paper. But thin paper is transparent, and print showing through from the reverse side makes dense typeset text unreadable. So the paper has to be simultaneously very thin and highly opaque, which is achieved by loading it heavily with mineral filler and calendering it hard, and every other property has to survive that treatment. The requirements are accordingly a set of tensions rather than a list. Grammage and thickness with tight tolerances, because a book block of a thousand leaves multiplies any deviation. Opacity, which is the defining property. Folding endurance, since a filled, heavily calendered sheet is inherently brittle and a dictionary page is turned thousands of times. Tensile strength and surface strength, because the sheet has to run through a high-speed press and take ink without picking. Smoothness and brightness for print quality, dust content, water absorbency, moisture, and pH - the last mattering because a reference book is meant to last and an acidic sheet destroys itself. Issued on 28 December 2018 and in force since 1 July 2019, it replaces GB/T 1912-2007.

This standard specifies the classification, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transportation and storage of dictionary paper. This standard applies to advanced printing papers such as reference books and scientific publications for rotation and lithography.

3 Classification

Dictionary paper is divided into two types. ordinary type and micro type.

4 Requirements

4.1 The technical specifications of the dictionary paper shall comply with the requirements of Table 1 or the contract.
