GB/T 17935-2023 is the English-translated version of 螺口灯座.

GB/T 17935-2023 covers E14, E27 and E40 Edison screw lampholders used to connect lamps and semi-luminaires to the supply, and it covers switched lampholders used in alternating current circuits whose working voltage stays at or below 250 V root mean square. E5 lampholders for indoor series connection up to 25 V and E10 lampholders for indoor and outdoor series connection up to 60 V are included, together with built-in E10 holders connected individually to the supply; none of these is for retail sale. Where reasonable, the document is also applied to non-Edison screw lampholders connected in series with the supply, for instance in Christmas tree chains, and to adaptors. Lampholders wholly or partly built into a luminaire, and those specified for mounting inside equipment, are covered as far as the lampholder requirements reach. Holders for indoor, outdoor, residential and industrial lighting installations are included, candle lampholders among them, while street lighting, ships' decks, vehicles and places liable to explosion may need a special construction. Three-source E26d lampholders are excluded. The requirements assume lamp currents up to 2 A for E14, 4 A for E27 and 16 A for E40. The document is identical to IEC 60238:2020 and replaces GB/T 17935-2007.

1 Scope

The document applies to E14, E27 and E40 Edison screw lampholders used for the supply connection of lamps and of semi-luminaires. A footnote to the term semi-luminaire states that the technical requirements for semi-luminaire lampholders are still under study.

The document also applies to switched lampholders used in alternating current circuits whose working voltage does not exceed 250 V root mean square.

The document also applies to E5 screw lampholders used indoors in series connection at a working voltage not exceeding 25 V, to E10 screw lampholders used indoors and outdoors in series connection at a working voltage not exceeding 60 V, and to built-in E10 lampholders connected individually to the supply. None of these lampholders is for retail sale.

As far as reasonable adoption of the document goes, it also applies to non-Edison screw lampholders connected in series with the supply. A note gives, as an example, the use of this type of lampholder in Christmas tree chains.

The document also applies to lampholders wholly or partly built into a luminaire and to lampholders specified for mounting inside equipment. It deals with the lampholder requirements only. For other requirements, such as those on terminals or on protection against electric shock at the lamp cap, when the equipment is tested in accordance with its own standard, lampholders of this kind are mounted in suitable equipment and are then examined and tested in accordance with the relevant requirements for that equipment. Lampholders of this kind, and lampholders fitted with a snap-on outer shell, for use by the luminaire manufacturer only, are not for retail sale.

The document applies to lampholders mounted in indoor and outdoor lighting installations, in residential lighting installations and on industrial lighting equipment, and it applies to candle lampholders as well. In certain places with special conditions of use, such as street lighting, ships' decks and motor vehicles, and in places liable to explosion, lampholders of special construction may be used. Information on the application of lampholders in household and similar electrical appliances is given in Annex C.

The document does not apply to three-source lampholders E26d.

The document was drawn up on the basis of the following parameters of the corresponding ordinary lighting lamps: the E14 lamp cap, for lamps with a current not exceeding 2 A; the E27 lamp cap, for lamps with a current not exceeding 4 A; and the E40 lamp cap, for lamps with a current not exceeding 16 A, or 32 A where the nominal voltage of the supply does not exceed 130 V, see 5.5 and 6.3.

For lampholders used in luminaires, the maximum operating temperature is given in IEC 60598.

2 Normative references

Several lines of this clause are crossed by the heavy watermark of the digitized copy; the entries listed above are those that could be read with certainty on the page, and the dates of a few of the cited Chinese notes are partly covered.

3 Terms and definitions

The clause opens with the statement that the following terms and definitions apply to the document.

3.1 cord-grip lampholder: a lampholder fitted with a device able to grip a flexible cord, by which the lampholder is suspended.

3.2 thread entry lampholder: a lampholder carrying a threaded component at the entry of the supply cable, so that it can be mounted on a bracket with a matching thread. A note records that a thread entry lampholder was formerly called a screwed conduit entry lampholder.

3.3 backplate lampholder: a lampholder mounted directly on a supporting surface or on a suitable enclosure by means of its assembled base or its one-piece base.

3.4 lampholder for building-in: a lampholder designed to be mounted in a luminaire, in an attached enclosure or in a similar device.

3.4.1 unenclosed lampholder: a lampholder for building-in that needs an additional device, for example an enclosure, to be fitted in order to meet the requirements of the document on protection against electric shock.

3.4.2 enclose lampholder: a lampholder for building-in that meets the requirements of the document on protection against electric shock and the corresponding requirements for classification by degree of protection of the enclosure. The English term is printed in the standard as enclose lampholder.

3.5 independent lampholder: a lampholder that can be mounted on its own outside a luminaire while providing all the protective measures needed to match its classification and marking.

3.6 terminal/contact assembly: a component or assembly of components by which the end of the supply cable is connected to the lamp cap contact. A note refers to Figure 17 for illustrations of certain definitions.

3.7 outer shell: the cylindrical component that prevents contact between the user and the lamp cap. Note 1 records that the outer surface of this component may or may not carry the external thread used to fit a shade holder ring. Note 2 refers to Figure 17 for illustrations of certain definitions.

3.7.1 snap-on outer shell: an outer shell without a thread, used on a body assembled without a thread. A note states that when the snap-on outer shell is removed the lampholder is not suitable for use, and that it is therefore recommended to place any certification mark in such a position that the mark is not visible when the shell is removed.

3.8 screw shell: the cylindrical component carrying the Edison internal thread used to hold the corresponding lamp cap. Note 1 records that in some lampholder constructions the screw shell is permanently fixed to the outer shell or forms one piece with it. Note 2 refers to Figure 17 for illustrations of certain definitions.

3.9 insulating ring: the cylindrical component made of insulating material, placed between the metal screw shell and the metal outer shell and separating the two. A note refers to Figure 17 for illustrations of certain definitions.

The English title on the front page of the standard is printed as Edison screw lamphoders. The word is a typing error for lampholders and has been corrected in this listing; the standard is identical to IEC 60238:2020, whose title is Edison screw lampholders.

Relationship to previous standards Relationship to previous standards

The front page carries the note that the standard replaces GB/T 17935-2007. The foreword states that the standard was first published in 1999 as GB 17935-1999, that the first revision was GB/T 17935-2007, and that the present edition is the second revision.

The foreword records that, apart from structural adjustment and editorial changes, the main technical changes with respect to GB/T 17935-2007 are: the terms and definitions of enclosed reinforced insulation lampholder, partly reinforced insulation lampholder, rated voltage, working voltage, rated current, critical frequency, starting voltage, starting pulse voltage, rated starting voltage, maximum working voltage, maximum working peak output voltage and equivalent converted peak voltage were added, see Clause 3; the words and 750 V in the provision on standard rated voltages of 250 V, 500 V and 750 V were deleted, see 5.1 of the 2007 edition; the classification was changed, see Clause 7, which was Clause 6 of the 2007 edition; the classification of partly reinforced insulation lampholders and of enclosed reinforced insulation lampholders was added, see 7.5; the requirement that the lampholder is to carry the stated markings, with the E5 and E10 lampholders excepted, was added, see 8.1; the requirements for insulation resistance and electric strength between the parts of the lampholder were changed, see 15.4, which was 14.4 of the 2007 edition; the requirements for creepage distances and clearances were changed, see Clause 18, which was Clause 17 of the 2007 edition; a provision on measuring the depth of an indentation in case of doubt and then calculating the diameter of the indentation from a formula was deleted, see 20.1 of the 2007 edition, the formula itself is not reproduced here; and the provision that the requirements on surface treatment in Clause 3 of GB/T 4207-2003 are not used was deleted, see 20.4 of the 2007 edition.

The foreword states that the standard is identical to IEC 60238:2020 and records the following minimal editorial changes: the reference to Clause 8 in 13.1 was corrected to Clause 9, the clause number being wrong in IEC 60238:2020, see 13.1; Table 13a) and Table 13b) of IEC 60238:2020 were merged into Table 13 of the standard, to fit the drafting rules; references to Annex C, see Clause 1, and to Annex D, see 18.1, were added; the figure 155 in Figure 8 b) was corrected to 155 +/- 1, the figure coming from IEC 60068-2-75 and IEC 60238:2020 having omitted the +/- 1; and the figure 20 in Figure 16 was corrected to 20 +/- 0.2, the figure coming from IEC 60529 and IEC 60238:2020 having omitted the +/- 0.2.
