Scope

GB/T 17693.6-2008 is the English-translated version of 外语地名汉字译写导则 阿拉伯语.

This part of GB/T 17693 lays down the rules for transforming Arabic geographical names into Chinese. Clause 1 states that it applies to the writing and translation of Arabic names in Chinese characters.

The foreword lists the eight parts of GB/T 17693, covering English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese and Mongolian, and records the changes made to the 1999 edition, among them the addition of a normative references clause, the recasting of the former general clause into provisions on the transliteration of names and the translation of place names, the presentation of all the examples of the former detail clause in tabular form, the cancellation of the former clause 5 whose content was merged into Table 1, and the addition of Arabic alphabetical ordering alongside the Roman ordering in Annexes A and B. The table of contents gives Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, General and Rule as the clauses, followed by normative Appendix A, a writing and translation table of the generic words commonly used in Arabic place names, normative Appendix B, a writing and translation table of common names, and informative Annex C, an Arabic alphabet and Roman alphabet transliteration table.

Clause 2 cites GB/T 17693.1, whose terms and definitions clause 3 also adopts; clause 3 then carries five entries whose term names the draft does not print, covering the distinguishing name given to a geographical entity, the word that distinguishes each geographical entity, the word for the category of geographical entity, the generic component of a name, and the writing in Chinese characters of a name belonging to another language.

Clause 4, General, has names transliterated and place names translated, directs that writing and translation follow the national standard documents, official maps and gazetteers most recently published in the country concerned, and refers the Chinese writing of Arabic place names to the Arabic to Chinese transliteration table in Table 1.

The draft stops at the end of clause 4 and does not show clause 5. The standard was proposed by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China and is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee of Standardization of Geographical Names.

It replaces GB/T 17693.6-1999, was issued on November 25, 2008 and has applied since April 1, 2009.
