Scope
GB/T 16638.4-2008 is the English-translated version of 空气动力学 概念、量和符号 第4部分：飞机的空气动力、力矩及其系数和导数.
GB/T 16638.4-2008 is Part 4 of the Chinese national standard series on aerodynamic concepts, quantities and symbols, and specifies the terms and symbols for the aerodynamic forces, moments, their coefficients and derivatives of aircraft.
It applies to fixed-wing aircraft, treated as a rigid body, and may be used for reference for other flight vehicles; the axis systems it relies on are those defined in GB/T 16638.2-2008, and its terms are harmonised with GB/T 14410-2008 on flight dynamics.
For each quantity it gives the term with its English equivalent, the definition or defining formula, the symbol and the unit: the resultant force and moment, lift, drag, cross-stream force and the three moments with their coefficients in the air-path, body and intermediate axis systems, the hinge moments and hinge moment coefficients of elevator, rudder, aileron, spoiler and tab, and the aerodynamic derivatives, starting with the static derivatives with respect to angle of attack, angle of sideslip and Mach number.It replaces GB/T 16638.4-1996, adding definitions of the spoiler and tab hinge moments, of the derivatives of the transverse force coefficient and of the hinge moment derivatives.

Foreword
GB/T 16638, Aerodynamics - Concepts, quantities and symbols, is divided into four parts:
- Part 1: Common terms of aerodynamics;
- Part 2: Axis systems and aircraft motion state quantities;
- Part 3: Geometric characteristics of aircraft;
- Part 4: Aerodynamic forces, moments, their coefficients and derivatives of aircraft.
This part is Part 4 of GB/T 16638.
This part collects and screens the common aerodynamic terms used in China over many years and aligns them as far as possible with the usage of most other countries; the terms and symbols of this part relating to aircraft aerodynamics are harmonised with the national standard GB/T 14410-2008, Flight dynamics - Concepts, quantities and symbols.
This part replaces GB/T 16638.4-1996, Aerodynamics - Concepts, quantities and symbols - Part 4: Aerodynamic forces, moments, their coefficients and derivatives of aircraft.
Compared with GB/T 16638.4-1996, the main changes in this part are as follows:
a) definitions of the spoiler hinge moment, the tab hinge moment and the derivatives of the transverse force coefficient, among others, have been added;
b) definitions of the hinge moment derivatives, among others, have been added.
This part was proposed by and is under the jurisdiction of China Aviation Industry Corporation I.
