Scope
GB/T 16638.3-2008 is the English-translated version of 空气动力学 概念、量和符号 第3部分：飞机几何特性.
GB/T 16638.3-2008 is Part 3 of the Chinese national standard on aerodynamic concepts, quantities and symbols, and specifies the basic concepts, terms and symbols used to describe the geometric characteristics of aircraft.
Each entry gives the term in Chinese and English, its definition and its symbol and unit: general characteristics (aircraft reference plane, point, line, axis system, reference area and length), overall dimensions, fuselage geometry (axis system, setting, length, cross-sectional area, equivalent diameter, fineness ratio, upsweep angle), aerofoil geometry (chord, mean line, thickness, camber, leading edge radius, trailing edge angle) and wing geometry (span, chords, mean geometric and aerodynamic chord, area, aspect and taper ratios, sweep, dihedral, twist and setting angles, winglets and strakes), followed by further components of the aircraft.
It applies to fixed-wing aircraft, and other flight vehicles may refer to it; its terms are coordinated with GB/T 14410-2008 on flight mechanics. It replaces GB/T 16638.3-1996, adding definitions of the canard, strake wing, winglet, all-moving horizontal tail, spoiler and trim tab and revising the definition of the aerofoil mean line.
Issued on 18 July 2008 and in force since 1 January 2009. Classification: ICS 49.020, CCS V04. The document runs to 21 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

Foreword
GB/T 16638, Aerodynamics - Concepts, quantities and symbols, is divided into four parts:
- Part 1: Common terms of aerodynamics;
- Part 2: Axis systems and aircraft motion state variables;
- Part 3: Aircraft geometry;
- Part 4: Aerodynamic forces and moments of aircraft, their coefficients and derivatives.
This part is Part 3 of GB/T 16638.
This part collects and screens the common aerodynamic terms used in China over many years, bringing them as far as possible into line with the usage of most countries internationally; the aircraft aerodynamic terms and symbols in this part are coordinated with the national standard GB/T 14410-2008, Flight mechanics - Concepts, quantities and symbols.
This part replaces GB/T 16638.3-1996, Aerodynamics - Concepts, quantities and symbols - Part 3: Aircraft geometry.
Compared with GB/T 16638.3-1996, the main changes in this part are as follows:
a) definitions of foreplane (canard), strake wing, winglet, all-moving horizontal tail, spoiler, trim tab and others have been added;
b) the definition of the aerofoil mean line has been modified.

This part is under the jurisdiction of China Aviation Industry Corporation I.
