Foreword

This standard replaces GB 14735-1993, Specifications for the operation of hooks used in port cargo handling.

Compared with GB 14735-1993, the main differences of this standard are as follows:

- the field of application in the scope has been extended, and the provision excluding operations with dangerous goods has been deleted (see Clause 1);

- the nose hook has been added to the forms of hooks (see Figure 1);

- the classification of hook strength grades has been changed: the former five strength grades have been regrouped into three strength grades in accordance with the ISO standards, raising the level of the strength grading (see 3.2);

- the series of rated lifting capacities of hooks has been revised: the lifting capacities are now given by strength grade, and a grade T(8) hook with a rated lifting capacity of 20 t has been added (see 3.3);

- in the material requirements, the sulfur and phosphorus contents of the hook material are limited according to the strength grade (see 4.1.1);

- in the process requirements, a requirement for the surface hardness of the hook after heat treatment has been added, together with a provision that hooks shall not be repaired by welding during manufacture (see 4.2);

- in the strength requirements, the following have been added: (1) after lifting a test load of 2 times the rated lifting capacity, the permanent deformation of the eye diameter shall not exceed 1 % of the diameter; (2) when lifting a test load of 4 times the rated lifting capacity, the hook shall not fracture before the load slips off the hook (see 4.4);

- in the storage requirements, requirements on the environment in which hooks are kept have been added (see 6.2);

- the use of hooks has been moved from the annex into the body of the standard, and the repair of hooks has been deleted (see Clause 7);

- in-service inspection of hooks has been added (see 7.4);

- the inspection and discard of hooks has been moved from the annex into the body of the standard, and the following discard criteria have been added: (1) the throat opening of a grade T hook exceeds the nominal dimension by 10 %; (2) wear of the hook eye exceeds 10 % of the nominal dimension; (3) surface wear, corrosion or pitting of the hook exceeds 10 % of the nominal dimension; (4) bending deformation of the hook (see Clause 8).
