1 Scope

Part 5 of China's green tea standard, covering mee tea - the green tea rolled into long slender strips said to resemble an eyebrow, which is what the Chinese name meicha means. It specifies the terms and definitions, the product grades and physical reference samples, the requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules, and the marking, labelling, packaging, transport and storage of mee tea. Mee tea is the other great Chinese green tea export alongside gunpowder, and the two are the shapes into which most export-grade green tea is made: gunpowder rolled into a pellet, mee tea rolled into a strip. The strip form is graded through a set of named trade grades - chunmee, zhenmei, xiumei and the others - which are recognised across the export trade and which correspond to the size, the tightness and the tippiness of the strip and to the proportion of broken leaf. That system of grade names is what this part fixes, and it is the operative content: the names are used in contracts and on shipping documents, and until they are defined against physical reference samples they mean whatever the seller intends. The requirements then cover the appearance of the dry leaf, the liquor, the aroma, the taste and the infused leaf for each grade, together with the physicochemical requirements and the food safety limits. Issued on 14 June 2016 and in force since 1 January 2017.

This part of GB/T 14456 specifies the terms and definitions of eyebrow tea, product and physical standards, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, Logo, label, packaging, transportation and storage. This section applies to eyebrow tea in green tea products.
