1 Scope

Part of China's ship technology vocabulary, covering the facilities in which ships are built and repaired - the docks, berths, slipways, cranes, transfer systems and workshops of a shipyard. It establishes the terms and definitions used for shipbuilding and ship repair facilities. A shipyard is an unusual industrial site to name consistently, because its facilities are simultaneously civil works, heavy lifting machinery and production plant, and the same object is described differently by the three disciplines that meet on it. A building dock is a hydraulic structure to the civil engineer, a production area to the planner and a lifting and blocking problem to the ship constructor; a transfer system is at once a rail installation, a load transfer calculation and a scheduling constraint.
