Scope
GB/T 12923-2011 is the English-translated version of 船舶工艺术语 修、造船设施.
Part of China's ship technology vocabulary, covering the facilities in which ships are built and repaired - the docks, berths, slipways, cranes, transfer systems and workshops of a shipyard. It establishes the terms and definitions used for shipbuilding and ship repair facilities. A shipyard is an unusual industrial site to name consistently, because its facilities are simultaneously civil works, heavy lifting machinery and production plant, and the same object is described differently by the three disciplines that meet on it. A building dock is a hydraulic structure to the civil engineer, a production area to the planner and a lifting and blocking problem to the ship constructor; a transfer system is at once a rail installation, a load transfer calculation and a scheduling constraint. Fixing the terms is what lets a yard's own departments, and the owner's representatives and classification surveyors who work inside it, describe the same thing the same way. The vocabulary covers the building and repair positions themselves - the graving dock and its gate and pumping, the floating dock, the slipway and the launching arrangements, the building berth and the assembly hall - the transfer and handling equipment, from the gantry and jib cranes to the transporters and skidding systems, the outfitting quays and their services, the workshops in which the steel is prepared, cut, formed, assembled and painted, and the supporting installations. Because shipbuilding is contracted internationally and yards are built by one country for another, a vocabulary of this kind is quoted in specifications and contracts far more than it is read as a dictionary. Issued on 30 December 2011 and in force since 1 June 2012, it replaces GB/T 12923-1991.

This standard was drafted in accordance with GB/T 1.1-2009 given rules. This standard replaces GB/T 12923-1991 "Terminology for ship technology repair, shipbuilding facilities," compared with the GB/T 12923-1991, the main Technical changes are as follows:
