Scope

GB/T 12671-2008 is the English-translated version of 聚苯乙烯(PS)树脂.

GB/T 12671-2008 specifies the classification and designation, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transport and storage of polystyrene (PS) resin.

It applies to amorphous polystyrene homopolymers and does not cover expandable polystyrene, styrene copolymers, homopolymers of styrene derivatives or elastomer-modified grades.

Materials are designated according to GB/T 6594.1, and Table 1 sets superior, first and qualified grade limits for four designations (PS, MLN, 085-08; PS, MLN, 090-04; PS, ELN, 095-02; PS, MLN, 100-02) on pellet appearance, melt mass-flow rate, tensile stress at break, Charpy impact strength, Vicat softening temperature, temperature of deflection under load, residual styrene monomer, luminous transmittance and moulding shrinkage, each with its test method and specimen preparation.

It replaces GB 12671-1990: Charpy impact strength replaces Izod, flexural modulus is dropped, tensile stress at break and deflection temperature are added, pellet appearance replaces cleanliness, and a storage period of 12 months is introduced.

Foreword

This standard replaces GB 12671-1990, Polystyrene (PS) resin.

Compared with GB 12671-1990, the main differences in this standard are as follows:

- in Clause 2, Normative references, all references other than the hygiene standard and the standard on sampling methods for plastic resins have been changed to dated references;

- Clause 3, Classification and designation, has been added;

- Clause 4, General requirements, has been added;

- in 5.1, the requirement of the original standard that "the size of the pellets in any direction shall be (2 to 5) mm" has been deleted;

- in Clause 5, Requirements, "pellet appearance" replaces "cleanliness" of the original standard and "Charpy impact strength" replaces "Izod impact strength" of the original standard; "flexural modulus" of the original standard has been deleted, and items such as "tensile stress at break" and "temperature of deflection under load" have been added;

- a provision on the storage period of polystyrene resin has been added in Clause 9;

- Annex A, Correspondence between the national standard designations and the manufacturers' trade names of polystyrene resin products, has been added.
