GB/T 12496.3-1999 is the English-translated version of 木质活性炭试验方法灰分含量的测定.

GB/T 12496.3-1999 is the Chinese national method for determining the ash content of wooden activated carbon - the non-combustible mineral residue that remains when the carbon is burned, and one of the basic quality indicators of activated carbon used in water treatment, decolorization, food and pharmaceutical processing.

A dried, ground sample is ashed in a muffle furnace at (650±20) °C until constant mass, and the ash content is expressed as the mass of ash as a percentage of the original sample mass.

The standard sets out the principle, the apparatus (muffle furnace, 30 mL porcelain crucible, analytical balance, desiccator), the procedure and the calculation.

It is one part of the GB/T 12496 series of test methods for wooden activated carbon, replaces GB/T 12496.11-1990 and has been in force since 1 April 2000.

1 Scope

This standard specifies the method for determining the ash content of wooden activated carbon.

This standard is applicable to wooden activated carbon.

2 Principle

The sample is ashed for several hours at (650±20) °C, and the ash content is expressed as the mass of the ash obtained as a percentage of the mass of the original sample.

3 Apparatus

3.1 High-temperature electric furnace, adjustable to (650±20) °C.

3.2 Porcelain crucible, 30 mL.

3.3 Analytical balance, capable of weighing to 0.1 mg.

3.4 Desiccator.
